1. What do I need to do to keep my outdoor fountain clean? Periodically, you may need to scoop out any leaves, seeds, or debris that get into your outdoor fountain. In addition, you may need to scrub out the inside of the fountain with a stiff brush to remove bird droppings, algae, or any build up. Also, you should periodically (once every couple of weeks or so) remove the water pump, wipe it down thoroughly, clean out the inside with a toothbrush or pipe cleaner, rinse, and reinstall. If you do use any cleaning products in your fountain, be sure to use products that are safe for children and animals, as pets and wildlife may decide to use your fountain for drinking on occasion, as well-and you just never know about small children.
2. How do I prepare my outdoor fountain for the "off season"? In any area where it will freeze during the cold or "off season," the most important thing to do to prepare your outdoor fountain is to empty the water out of the fountain. Obviously, turn off and/or unplug the fountain first because you do not want the pump operating without any water going through it. Then, depending on the outdoor fountain you own, you could simply tip and empty the water or scoop most of the water out and then use a turkey baster to extract the last remaining tablespoons of water. This is also the perfect time to give your fountain a final cleaning before storing.
Most fountains can easily be carried indoors for storage, but if your outdoor fountain is too large to move, cover it well with a tarp or other durable covering and weight the edges down so leaves, pinecones, and other debris do not collect in the fountain. Next spring set up will be as simple as uncovering the fountain, adding fresh water, plugging it back in, and turning it on. (Note: Not all fountains have an on/off button. If not, the water pump will start immediately when you plug it in.)
3. Do I need a professional to install my outdoor fountain? Not at all! There are a huge variety of outdoor fountains available that are simple and easy to set up and don't require any professional installation. Simply locate a level area in your yard or garden where you want to display your outdoor fountain, ensure that it is near a power source (if electric) or in a well-lit, sunny area (if solar), and then set it up. Add water, plug it in (if electric), and turn it on. It's that easy!
4. Aren't outdoor fountains really expensive? Outdoor fountains need not be expensive. In fact, there are outdoor fountains available in a huge range of prices-from $100 all the way up to thousands of dollars depending on the size, materials used, and style.
